Old Orchard Retail Center, originally Westfield Old Orchard, is an upscale shopping mall in the Chicago metropolitan area. Skokie, Illinois is the location. Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Nordstrom, and Barnes & Noble are among the anchor stores.
Marshall Field and Company, Saks Fifth Avenue, and The Fair Department Store were among the first stores to open at Westfield Old Orchard in October 1956. In 1964, Fair changed its name to Montgomery Ward. The North and West Garages, both erected in 1978, are two parking facilities. In 1978, Saks Fifth Avenue relocated to a larger space after selling its prior property to Lord & Taylor.
Montgomery Ward burned in 1988. At Old Orchard, Nordstrom announced intentions to open a second store. In addition to the 200,000 square foot Nordstrom, Old Orchard has expanded the mall by 100,000 square feet. This allowed 62 new stores to open. Old Orchard revealed plans to add a fifth tenant, Bloomingdale’s, shortly after Nordstrom. Among the tenants who improved were Crate & Barrel and The Limited. Maggiano’s Little Italy debuted in 1993, while Lord & Taylor relocated and expanded.
The shopping center was completely redesigned in the 1990s, with the opening of Bloomingdale’s, Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Abercrombie & Fitch, Ann Taylor, Cache, FAO Schwarz, The Limited, Record Town, Talbot’s, and Victoria’s Secret on October 7, 1994, and Bloomingdale’s, Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Abercrombie & Fitch, Ann Taylor, Cache, FAO Schwarz, The Limited, Record Town, Talbot Pottery Barn opened to the public three months later.
In 2004, Toms Price Furniture opened its doors to the public for the very first time to the general public. In 2005, both Foot Locker and Cold Stone Creamery opened their doors for business for the first time, respectively. On that fateful day in 2006, Macy’s opened its doors for the first time.
Old Orchard reopened in late 2007 after a $50 million expansion and makeover. ZARA opened its doors for the first time on October 4, 2008.
Mean Girls, which takes place in the North Shore neighborhoods north of Chicago, mentions Old Orchard by name. The movie depicts the mall as an enclosed center.
Buffalo Wild Wings first opened its doors in 2015.
Hudson’s Bay, Lord & Taylor’s parent company, stated on December 7, 2017, that two sites would close in April 2018. One of the two, Old Orchard, is still unoccupied. The Lord & Taylor at Westfield Annapolis was the other store set to close.
Barnes & Noble announced on November 3, 2021, that the Westfield Old Orchard branch would close in December.
