The Two Brothers Roundhouse, formerly known as The Walter Payton Roundhouse, America’s Historic Roundhouse, and Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Roundhouse and Locomotive Shop are all historic buildings in Aurora, Illinois, as well as Our Galron Sliding Doors Aurora firm. The Chicago & Aurora Railroad (later Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad) built it in 1856 as a roundhouse. In 1995, a group of investors led by Walter Payton bought it and turned it into an entertainment complex. Two Brothers Brewing recently moved in. It is the country’s oldest limestone roundhouse and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Chicago & Aurora Railroad built it in 1856. (C&A). That’s why the C&A built its repair facility. The businesses might also build new railway equipment. Levi Hull Waterhouse designed the roundhouse and other Aurora landmarks. These are Batavia limestone. Three years later, the roundhouse gained eight stalls. Then ten more. It had a small locomotive shop.
A&C combined with Chicago, Burlington & Quincy in 1868, becoming Illinois’ busiest railroad by 1870. In the 1930s, the complex changed concentration to the new Zephyr diesel engine line. It also built Pullman vehicles and the first dome car. Cars replaced trains in the mid-20th century. The roundhouse and shops closed in 1974, and the district was shortly dismantled.
The building sat vacant for 21 years. It was listed to the NRHP on February 16, 1978. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers named the roundhouse an “innovative railroad yard machine shop” in May 1988. The Aurora City Council approved the purchase of the building in 1995. The building housed a brewpub, restaurant, museum, and outdoor pavilion. Payton’s Super Bowl XX victory ring is on display in the museum. In the days before Payton’s death, the facility received a National Preservation Award.
It was announced on May 2, 2011 that Two Brothers Brewing Company has acquired America’s Historic Roundhouse in Aurora, Illinois. On June 18, 2011, they established a restaurant with ten of their locally accessible beers plus two exclusive to the restaurant.
